  • why?? cane sugar is refined and bleached.. they both seem ok in moderation. i'm a bit skeptical on the mercury thing. i'm surprised nothing has been said about mercury in hfcs before. i definitely need to cut down on sugar, period. i'm so hooked. it's like a drug!!

  • @miamiwax Thanks for the comment! Be sure to check out nutritionfacts. org for more information on the best sweeteners!

  • Well, I think you forgot that high fructose corn syrup has mercury because it's a bottom feeder.  I'm sure I read that somewhere.

  • As good as sugar! Hahaha, a good one. Horse shit is "as good" as bull shit. "As good" meaning "no worse". Understandable, but its still shit!

  • HFCS=high-fructose corn syrup, ZFCS=zero-fructose corn syrup (like Karo-brand light-colored corn syrup in the US). In both cases, the rest of the sugar in the product is glucose. For example, ZFCS is 100% glucose. HFCS-42 is 42% fructose and 58% glucose. Table sugar is 50% fructose and 50% glucose.

Now, getting to the point: The more fructose in a sugar mix, the worse it is for your body, assuming every other condition is equal.

ZFCS (0% fructose) is less bad than HFCS-42 (42% fructose) is less bad than table-sugar (50% fructose) is less bad than HFCS-55 (55% fructose) in terms of the bad effects of humans consuming these products, gram-for-gram.

However, they are all sugars, and they are all bad for you beyond a small required level of consumption. Does that clear it up? But fructose is worse than glucose, because it is metabolized (converted to usable energy , or to fat) in the liver, and stresses and fattens the liver, whereas glucose can be metabolized (burned) directly in muscles. There is a ton more details to it than what I write here, but this is the essence of it.

The video is confusing because the syrup bottle shown is a ZFCS, and not a HFCS. It is wrong to equate the table sugar on the left with the ZFCS on the right in terms of bodily badness. Adding more confusion, the video then uses a glass of Cola (soda) to symbolize HFCS.
